November 2007 October Employee-of-the-Month: Shannon Casady, case manager with managed care services, has been with ASCOG for 16 months. Since coming to the program, Shannon has been a bright spot in the department. Shannon has a positive attitude about her work and the program. She has managed several difficult cases throughout the months and strives to assure each consumer has all of the services possible. She researches outside the box to find resources to meet the needs of elderly consumers. ASCOG Holiday: ASCOG will close Friday, Nov. 16 in observance of Statehood Day. The offices will open at 8 a.m. Mon. Nov. 19. ASCOG will close Thurs. and Fri. Nov. 22 and 23 in observance of Thanksgiving. The offices will open at 8 a.m., Mon. Nov. 26. Medication Safety Training for Seniors: The National Council on Patient Information and Education has launched a national education awareness campaign to promote safe and appropriate medicine use among America’s older adults. MUST for Seniors is an interactive program to give older adults and caregivers the tools and know how to avoid medication misuse, how to recognize and manage common side effects and skills to avoid medication errors. Workforce Development Division Adds Staff Members: Archer McPhaul, Lawton, has joined ASCOG and the division as deputy director operations and Laura Goldring, formerly from Comanche, has been selected as South Central Oklahoma youth coordinator. New Business Members on the South Central Oklahoma Workforce Investment Board: Sue Brown, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Lawton, and Curtis Pryor, Purcell, have agreed to serve a two-year term on the area’s workforce investment board. They were officially installed as directors at the board’s meeting in October 2007. Oklahoma Employment Security Commission (OESC) Annual Monitoring Review: OESC recently completed its annual Workforce Investment Act financial and programmatic monitoring review of the South Central Oklahoma Workforce Investment Board and ASCOG. More to follow. Medication Drug Plans Available for 2008: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has announced that beneficiaries, their caregivers and family members can begin to review 2008 Medicare prescription drug plans and health plan information online through the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Finder at www.medicare.gov. The enhanced plan finder options offer more information and greater clarity on available drug plans, including out of pocket costs, pharmacy networks and important Medicare news and updates. Enrollment begins November 15, 2007 Tipton Senior Center Hires New Coordinator: Donna Altom has been selected as the new coordinator for the Tipton Senior Center. Donna replaces Ellie Price who elected to seek other employment. Donna is originally from Tipton and graduated from Tipton High School. She and her husband have four children. Donna is a volunteer in Tipton and enjoys gardening. When time permits she also assist with the family business which consists of paddle boats, miniature golf and sandwich shop located at the Quartz Mountain State Lodge. Masonic Grant Provides Assistance to 107 Seniors: The Masonic Fraternity of Oklahoma partnered with Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) across the state to assist persons 55 years of age and older with direct services. ASCOG’s AAA portion of the Masonic grant was $55,212. In FY 2007 we were able to purchase direct services for 107 seniors which included, but not limited to, eye glasses, hearing devices, dentures, home repairs and modifications, wheel chairs, walking devices and assistance with heating and electric bills. SOIC Receives 2007 Innovation Award: The Southwest Oklahoma Impact Coalition was recognized with 2007 Innovation Award at the National Association of Development Organization’s Annual Conference in Austin, TX. SOIC, a 20-county regional economic development coalition, was formed in 2005 as a partnership between ASCOG and the neighboring council of governments, the South Western Oklahoma Development Authority, and the five institutions of higher education in southwest Oklahoma: Cameron University, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, Western Oklahoma State College and Redlands Community College. Oklahoma Comprehensive Water Plan Seeking Nominees: ASCOG is assisting the Oklahoma Water Research Institute in identifying individuals to participate in regional input meetings to be conducted next year in the ASCOG region. Participants should be knowledgeable about regional water issues, willing to listen and reflect on others’ interests and committed to developing recommendations that meet the needs of all Oklahomans.
