March 2007 February Employee of the Month: Elizabeth Milligan is the information and referral specialist with supportive services division and has been with ASCOG ten months. She works closely with the Silver Haired Legislators, attends numerous meetings, has become quite knowledgeable of the area agency on aging and is always willing to help others. Minority Aging Conference: The 22nd Annual Oklahoma Minority Aging Conference will be held in Tulsa, March 21-23 at the Marriott at Southern Hills. This year’s conference theme is “the spirit of aging.” For additional info, contact Elizabeth Milligan at ASCOG. City of Lawton Declared a “Silver Winner:” The city of Lawton was recently recognized at the City Showcase at the National League of Cities’ Congress of Cities for its sewer rehabilitation program. Instead of hiring a private contractor to eliminate sanitary sewer overflows, the city conducted the improvements in house saving a considerable amount of money and being ahead of schedule on updating the system. Congratulations, Lawton! Oklahoma State Aging Conference: The 2007 State Aging Conference, Celebrating Our Foundations, will be held May 8-10 at the Reed Center; 5800 Will Rogers Boulevard in Midwest City. The conference will feature a senior film festival, spelling bee, poetry contest, award ceremonies and many educational workshops. New Ombudsman Supervisor: Tim White has been selected as an ombudsman supervisor for ASCOG’s Area Agency on Aging. Tim was previously with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services where he worked in child welfare and adult protective services in the Ardmore area. He now makes him home in Duncan. Brownfields Cleanup Funds Available: Through a revolving loan fund provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, ASCOG has funding available to cleanup brownfield sites. Brownfields are defined as a real property of which the expansion, redevelopment or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. Brownfield sites eligible for cleanup funds do not have to be owned by a public entity, but the owner cannot have caused the contamination. Elgin Industrial Park: On February 14, the Oklahoma School Land Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the sale of school land to the city of Elgin for developing an industrial park. Masonic Fraternity of Oklahoma Bequest: Funding provided by the Masonic Fraternity of Oklahoma is still available for individuals 55+ for assistance with, but not limited to, home repairs, utility bills, wheelchair ramps, prescription drugs, eye glasses, hearing aids, transportation, chore services and transportation to and from medical facilities. For qualification guidelines contact Elizabeth Milligan, aging information specialist at ASCOG Youth Symposium: The South Central Oklahoma Workforce Investment Board (SCWOIB) Youth Council sponsored an area-wide youth symposium on February 7, 2007. The symposium brought together local educators, local employment and training staff, and state staff to begin a collaborative process of building a youth support system in South Central Oklahoma. Chickasha Public Schools was recognized for their superior efforts in providing Oklahoma Career Ready Certificates to their graduating seniors in 2006. Local Workforce Leaders Attend NAWB Conference: Al Allee, Frederick, chairman of the South Central Oklahoma Workforce Investment Board, and Jeff Simpson, Walters, board treasurer, attended the National Association of Workforce Boards Annual Conference in Washington D.C., Feb 24-28, ‘07. The conference provided current national policy and best practices for workforce investment systems. SOIC 2nd Annual Conference – March 8: The Southwest Oklahoma Impact Coalition will hold its conference at Redlands Community College in El Reno from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thurs., Mar. 8, ’07. The focus of the conference will be critical issues confronting Southwest Oklahoma businesses. – SOIC is a voluntary coalition begun by the five institutions of higher education and the two councils of governments in SW OK. SOIC’s mission is to reinforce and help grow wealth in the SW quadrant of Oklahoma by maximizing and coordinating workforce and economic development opportunities through a collaborative process.
