January 2007 December Employee of the Month and ASCOG Staff Member Dies: Doris Corbin, 55, team leader case manager for managed care services died Dec. 14 in Baylor Medical Center in Dallas. Doris spent 19 years at ASCOG making life better for elderly folks. She was selected the ASCOG employee of the month for December. Doris was a wonderful lady who carried a heavy workload with a smile on her face. We miss her. State Vehicles Transferred to Fire Departments: Volunteer fire departments in the ASCOG receiving 2007 Ford trucks were Byars, Ft. Cobb, Apache, New Hope, Broxton, Alden, Twin Cities, Geronimo, Paradise Valley, Indiahoma, Hulen, Walters, Minco, Alex, Naples, Ninnekah, Hastings, Ringling, Wayne, Goldsby, Payne, Cole, Bray, Doyle, Empire, Corum, Tipton and Grandfield. ASCOG Offices Closing for New Year’s Day: ASCOG offices will close Mon. Jan 1. Offices will open at 8 a.m., Tues. Jan 16. ASCOG Offices Closing For Martin Luther King Day: ASCOG offices will close Mon., Jan. 15. Offices will open at 8 a.m., Tues., Jan 16. Workforce Development Division Attend Training: Paul Brown and Darlene Williams, Lawton and Melissa Harris and Ray Friedl, Duncan attended a state-level workshop on developing skills for job seekers utilizing the area’s Workforce Oklahoma Centers. Workforce Oklahoma Center Managers from Chickasha, Duncan and Lawton also attended. Area Youth Symposium Planned for February 2007: An area-wide youth symposium for South Central Oklahoma is being planned for Feb. 2007 by the South Central Oklahoma Workforce Investment Board Youth Council. Invitation will be forwarded to area high-school guidance counselors and principals. More to follow. Rural Brownfields Toolbox in Development: On Nov. 13, the Association of State Territorial Solid Waste Management Officials (ASTSWMO) announced plans to launch a digital toolbox to assist states in marketing brownfields programs to rural communities. The toolbox will be made available January 2007, to access the toolbox visit www.astswmo.org. Brownfields Assessment Grant Proposal Completed: An assessment grant proposal has been submitted to the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. If approved, this would allow the brownfields program to continue for three more years with a budget of $200,000. News N’Briefs -2- January, 2007 Masonic Fraternity of Oklahoma: The Masonic Fraternity of Oklahoma is providing funding in the amount of $596,359 to the 11 Oklahoma Area Agencies on Aging to assist individuals 55+. ASCOG’s AAA portion of the funding will be $58,000. These monies will be used for, but not limited to, home maintenance, durable medical equipment, prescription drugs, utility bills and transportation. This money will allow the AAA’s state- wide to assist individuals with resources that previously were not available. For additional information contact Elizabeth Milligan at ASCOG. SCOWIB Elects New Officers: The South Central Oklahoma Workforce Investment Board has elected the following new officers for two-year terms: Chairman – Al Allee, CEO of the Frederick Memorial Hospital and Physicians Group; Vice-chairman – Chris Pittman, vice-president of La Sill Aviation in Lawton; Secretary – Bill Cunningham, economic development representative for Manufactures Alliance with offices in Lawton; and Jeff Simpson, Cotton Electric Cooperative vice-president of finance and accounting in Walters. Appointed to the SCOWIB executive committee were: Susan Stoll, of Lawton representing the Communication Workers of America and Jerry Martin, superintendent of Caddo-Kiowa Technology Center in Fort Cobb. Walt Lentz, immediate past chair of the board, will also serve on the executive committee. He is with Halliburton Energy Services Company in Duncan. – The 38-member board sets policy for federal Workforce Investment Act programs and oversees the Workforce Centers and the expenditure of nearly $3 million in the ASCOG area. Additionally, the board is charged by the Governor’s Council on Workforce and Economic Development to link those two functions together at the local level. (ASCOG serves as staff to the SCOWIB.) |
