Jack had represented the Stephens County Conservation District on the ASCOG board for over 15 years. We will miss his counsel and guidance and his great sense of humor! Trustee Darrell Sparks, Stephens County Commissioner, has been selected by the other Stephens County trustees to represent them on the ASCOG executive committee. November Employee-of-the-Month: Gentry Shofner has been a workforce development division counselor for one year. His work is outstanding and he is a person you can depend on to get the job done and know it will be right. Gentry is flexible and works well with co-workers and customers. Brownfields Conference: Registration is now open for the national brownfields conference to be held May 5-7, 2008, in Detroit, MI. Oklahoma Comprehensive Water Plan Seeking Nominees: ASCOG is assisting the Oklahoma Water Research Institute in identifying individuals to participate in regional input meetings to be conducted next year in the ASCOG region. Participants should be knowledgeable about regional water issues, willing to listen and reflect on others’ interests and committed to developing recommendations that meet the needs of all Oklahomans. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact Stan Rice, Ronnie Ward or Blaine Smith at ASCOG. Census Participation Needed: ARE YOU GOING TO LOSE YOUR COMMUNITY’S GRANT MONEY? In FY 2006, Oklahoma received just under $4.6 billion, or 1.2% of the total federal formula dollars distributed for the year. If your community receives funding for CDBG, National School Lunch Program, Highway Planning and Construction, Various Employment and Training Programs, Veterans Care, etc., start getting ready now for the 2010 Census! Dozens of communities had to conduct wage surveys to meet the Low to Moderate Income threshold for several types of grants including CDBG because their 2000 census information was inaccurate or incomplete. To help ensure the Master Address File (MAF) is current, the Census Bureau has launched the Local Update of Census Address (LUCA) program. In July 2007, the Census Bureau mailed invitation letters to tribal, state and local governments inviting them to participate in the LUCA process to ensure new housing developments, subdivided properties, and out-of-the-way addresses are included on the master list. Many Oklahoma communities have accepted invitations to take part in LUCA, but many more have not yet responded. Your program dollars may be at stake! If your community wants to participate in LUCA, then the highest ranking local official for your area must contact the Census Bureau by December 31st. More information on the Census Bureau’s LUCA program may be found at: http://www.census.gov/geo/www/luca2010/luca.html If you have additional questions, contact: Steve Barker, Oklahoma Department of Commerce 405.815.5182 or e-mail steven_barker@okcommerce.gov |
