April 2007 March Employee of the Month: Kay Mopope has been a job counselor with the workforce development division in the Lawton Workforce Oklahoma One-Stop Center for nine months and already proven to be a team player. She works very well with customers and is always willing to help out in the customer solutions unit when she’s not needed in her unit. Please Keep ASCOG Updated: The staff asks that communities, counties, conservation districts, fire departments, chambers of commerce and tribal offices let us know any time there is a change in elected officials, managers or addresses in their entity. Please call ASCOG with the information. Your help on an ongoing basis is appreciated. AAA Request for Proposals (RFP’s), Area and Management Plans Approved: The ASCOG board of trustees approved the AAA RFP’s, Area Plan and Management Plan for FY 08 at their regular meeting on Apr. 15th. The new ‘08 program year will begin July 1, ‘07. AAA Annual Spelling Bee: The senior citizens spelling bee will be held Apr.12th at the Center for Creative Living in Lawton. The competition begins at 2:00 pm. To register and receive a study guide call Elizabeth Milligan, ASCOG’s aging information specialist. Free AARP Guide “Medicines Made Easy”: AARP’s’ “Medicines Made Easy” is a guide to asking questions of your doctor and pharmacist, making wise choices and tracking your medications. It also includes a Personal Medication Record to help you manage your medications. Obtain a free copy by calling 1-888-787-2277 and ask for stock #D18366. ASCOG Brownfields Assessment and Revolving Loan Fund Tremendous Asset to Region: The U.S. EPA-funded programs provide for assessing and cleaning up of brownfields in the ASCOG region. ASCOG staff would like to explain the program to civic and other groups. Please call Nancy English at ASCOG to arrange for a presentation. CDBG Grant Applications Submitted: ASCOG community and economic development staff has, on behalf of member governments, prepared the following Community Development Block Grant applications: one (combining with REAP) for $139,725; two (community revitalization) totaling $224,139; and six (water/waste water engineering/construction) applications totaling $1,400,292. All of these applications were due March 15. Water/Wastewater Construction applications are due April 12 and currently the CED staff is preparing four applications totaling $900,842. The decrease in CDBG grant funds for this year makes the application process much more competitive. Any other member governments desiring to have ASCOG prepare an application for them should contact CED staff immediately. Luis and Virginia Cantu: The Oklahoma State Council on Aging has recognized the Cantu’s for their efforts and service to the state council. Luis and Virginia’s efforts over the past two years as state council members have had an important impact on the lives of all older Oklahomans. Prior to serving on the state council, Luis and Virginia were ASCOG AAA Council members. Southwest Oklahoma Impact Coalition (SOIC) Proposal Gets to Second Round: A proposal concept developed and submitted by SOIC to Oklahoma Department of Commerce for a U.S. Department of Labor Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development Grant has been selected to be one of two proposal submitted by the state. SOIC’s proposal addresses the need: (1) to assist school districts in incorporating work-based assessment and learning into current curriculums; (2) to develop a Workforce Oklahoma Assistance Center dedicated to assisting exiting military to see the benefits of remaining in Oklahoma and entering the Oklahoma workforce, and (3) to assist military spouses in obtaining the skills to become quality members of Oklahoma’s workforce. ASCOG is a founding member of SOIC. Workforce Investment Act Youth Service Provider Solicitation and Selection: The solicitation for WIA youth service providers that began in late March will continue with a “technical conference” for potential bidders on Apr.16. Proposals are due to ASCOG on May 9 and contracts will be completed by mid-May. South Central Oklahoma Workforce Investment Board (SCOWIB) Solicits Proposals: SCOWIB is soliciting proposals for individuals, organizations and/or entities to deliver Workforce Investment Act services for the area’s three workforce centers. ASCOG workforce development division staff has provided the services for over 20 years. However, SCOWIB is required by state policy to conduct a procurement action at least every three years to select the service provider of WIA services in the area. Any one interested in securing a request for proposal should contact Kathie Price at 800.627.4882 or e-mail: kathie@swoda.org. |
