      <title>Seniors Invited to Discuss Needs at State Capitol</title>

<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0in 0in 0pt"><font face=Arial><font size=2>Oklahoma’s seniors and senior advocates are invited to meet at the state capitol on Monday, Feb. 27 to discuss the needs of the growing number of older Oklahomans. Speaking at the event will be <span>Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb, Insurance Commissioner John Doak and Lance Robertson, OKDHS Aging Services Division director.</span></font></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0in 0in 0pt"><font face=Arial size=2></font> </p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0in 0in 0pt"><font face=Arial size=2>Senior Day at the Capitol is an annual event for older Oklahomans and professionals in the field of aging to learn about legislation and issues affecting older Oklahomans, share ideas, needs and concerns with state senators and representatives, and visit with nonprofit agencies to learn about their services for older Oklahomans.</font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0in 0in 0pt"><font face=Arial size=2></font> </p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0in 0in 0pt"><span><font face=Arial size=2>Register for the event at www.okseniorday.com through Feb. 15. Onsite registration will be available. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on the second floor of the capitol rotunda and the program starts at 9:30 a.m. in the House of Representatives chambers. Exhibits open at 11:30 a.m. and participants will have time to visit their legislators’ offices.</font></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0in 0in 0pt"><span><font face=Arial size=2></font></span> </p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0in 0in 0pt"><span><font face=Arial size=2>2010 estimates are that 694,024 Oklahomans are aged 60 and older. A recent census calculation shows one in six of Americans 65 years and older live in poverty.<span>  </span>Applying the new census measure nearly doubled the poverty rate of those aged 65 years and older to 16.1 percent. </font></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0in 0in 0pt"><span><font face=Arial size=2></font></span> </p>
<p class=MsoNormal style="margin:0in 0in 0pt"><span><font face=Arial><font size=2>“Given these demographics and the current economic environment, it is critical that legislators understand the importance of programs for Oklahoma’s seniors,” said Lance Robertson, director of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS) Aging Services Division. <span>  </span></font></font></span></p>

<div>The ASCOG Board of Trustees held their 2011 annual meeting on September 15.  Honorees for the event included area legislators who were in office in 1996 when the Rural Economic Action Plan (REAP) was enacted.  Also honored was ASCOG's employee of the year, Peggy Rush and 20-year employee, Trina Madden.
